School Counseling

Welcome to Independence Middle School Counseling Page

Counseling Information:

We aim to support your children academically, socially, and emotionally throughout their time at Independence and beyond. We meet with students individually, either at their request or if teachers, administrators, the school nurse, parents, or friends share a concern.

If your child is facing challenges such as anxiety, bullying, divorce, a death in the family, or any other difficult situation, please reach out. We can provide a supportive listening environment, help create an academic plan, and connect families with outside resources.

We also meet with small groups of students during lunch each week to build friendships, problem-solving skills, and social confidence. Every fall, we welcome new students to the district through “newcomers club” activities. In larger settings, we teach lessons on decision making, bullying awareness, responsible social media use, and character development.

In addition, we help students explore their interests and future plans through career exploration activities, including using Naviance (linked on our website). We also guide eighth graders through high school scheduling and transition planning.

Finally, we connect students and families with outside agencies that provide counseling, medical, or economic support. Please see the links below for more information.

We are proud to partner with you to ensure that IMS is a place where every student feels comfortable, supported, and valued!
