Student Support Counseling Structure K-12

The Bethel Park School District values the emotional, behavioral, and academic well being of its students.  Bethel Park has invested heavily in the support structure for its students with comprehensive coverage that includes social worker services, school counselor services, and site based therapy options for students who exhibit such a need.  
 

Elementary Student Support Counseling Structure and Activities

Within the five elementary buildings there are 4.5 social workers providing individual therapy, group sessions, and whole classroom instruction on social and emotional learning topics.  Coverage includes one full time EPIC social worker at Ben Franklin Elementary, Memorial Elementary, George Washington Elementary, and Abraham Lincoln Elementary.  William Penn Elementary is serviced by a part time EPIC social worker.  The districts social work services are provided through a contract with Southwood Hospital and their EPIC Social Work.  The elementary social work support staff provide the following:
  1. Social Skill Development Group
  2. Anxiety Group
  3. Anger Management Group
  4. Grief and Loss Group
  5. Newcomers Group
  6. Family Changes Group
  7. Friendship Group (Lunch Bunch Group)
  8. Social and Emotional Learning Classroom Lessons using the Second Step Program
  9. Classroom Lessons Based on Need
  10. BESS Universal Screening for behavioral and emotional needs

Neil Armstrong Middle School Student Support Counseling Structure

Neil Armstrong Middle School's student support counseling team is comprised of two school counselors and a part time social worker.  School counselors provide individual check ins with students based on needs they have.  School counselors will also conduct periodic check-ins with each student to make sure that they are progressing as they should day to day.  Also, EPIC social work services are provided to students with specific therapeutic needs.  The team at Neil Armstrong provide the following services:
  1. Kindness Awareness Activities
  2. Grief Awareness Activities
  3. Career Awareness Lessons
  4. Classroom Social Emotional Learning Lessons around self awareness, empathy, social media, and respect
  5. Anxiety Group
  6. Friendship Group
  7. Skills for Success Group
  8. Grief Group
  9. Anger Management Group
  10. Family Changes Group
  11. Social Skills Group
  12. Self Esteem Group
  13. Girl Relationships Group
  14. Self Esteem Group

Independence Middle School Student Support Counseling Support Structure and Activities

Independence Middle School's student support counseling team is comprised of two school counselors and one EPIC social worker.  School counselors provide individual check ins with students based on needs they have as well as conduct classroom lessons on various topics.  School counselors will also conduct periodic check-ins with students to make sure that they are progressing as they should day to day.  Also, EPIC social work services are provided to students with specific therapeutic needs.  The team at Independence Middle School provides the following services:
 
  1. Anxiety Group--focuses on stress relief strategies and mindfulness 

  2. Social Skills Group--addresses topics such as friendship, relationship building, and conversations skills for students at various developmental levels

  3. Organizational Skills Group--focuses on strategies to reduce distracted thinking and impulsive behaviors to improve school performance 

  4. Newcomers Group--offers students new to BPSD the opportunity to connect with others and with IMS activities.

  5. CAP--includes counselor-selected student representatives to help plan activities throughout the year including such topics as grief awareness and kindness counts

  6. Career Awareness Program--Counselors lead classroom lessons through interest inventories and career exploration activities

  7. Individual Counseling--students see counselors or social worker for social, emotional, and academic concerns. Counselors may review schedules, reinforce study and organizational skills, and serve as a liaison between students, teachers, and parents.

  8. Student Assistance Program--SAP team meets to discuss possible interventions for referred students

  9. BESS Universal Screening for behavioral and emotional needs--assesses needs of students in the areas of internalizing, self-regulation, and personal adjustment

Bethel Park Senior High School Student Support Counseling Structure and Activities

The Bethel Park High School Student Support Counseling Team is comprised of four school counselors and two EPIC social workers.  The school counselors provide individual check ins based on need as well as academic counseling services.  The EPIC social workers provide individual therapy as well as group sessions based on student need.  Activities that occur at the high school include:
  1. Therapeutic, Emotional, Avoidance, Monitoring, and Support Room
  2. Psychoeducational programs themed monthly based on student feedback
  3. College Fair Activity
  4. Individual counseling sessions
  5. Childhood Grief Awareness Activities
  6. Career Awareness Activities
  7. Junior Conferences for Academic Advisement
  8. Academic Counseling
  9. BESS Universal Screening for behavioral and emotional needs
